Shoppers at Asda in Spondon got more than they bargained for when students from Déda and the University of Derby took to the aisles for a lively Flash Mob performance.
The performers are all studying for the University of Derby BA (Hons) Dance degree which is based at Déda and one of the only programmes in the UK to be held at a professional dance house – combining work experience with theory and performance training.
As well as entertaining the crowds, the students raised vital funds to support Déda’s work with older adults in the community as part of the organisation’s ‘Dance Together – Live Better’ appeal.
Déda’s Head of Dance Development and Learning Clare Limb said: “I don’t think many people knew what was happening at first when a small group put down their baskets, revealed their Déda T-shirts and were then joined by more and more dancers as the routine progressed.
“Most people stopped to watch and cheer on the routine and we were very grateful for all the donations to support our pioneering work with older people in local communities across the city.
“The Flash Mob was a great way to showcase our work here at Dédais a creative centre for Dance, Contemporary Circus and Outdoor Work and I know it brightened up the day for many who took time out of their ‘big shop’ for a short while.”
Deborah Jones Community Champion (Asda Derby) said: “Having Déda in the store was a breath of fresh air, the students were so full of energy and enthusiasm, was great to see our customers and colleagues stop to watch, clapping and cheering them on.”
The event was livestreamed on You Tube – attracting thousands of views – and can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQRhU5W0384
