The ‘fab fifteen’ – 14 staff and Rachael – was a mix of past and present staff and even included her 14-year-old son who now works the occasional Saturday. The son with whom she found out she was pregnant with 15 years ago.
“I became owner of Ferrers Gallery having just found out I was pregnant with my son Jake, I had left my previous job in marketing due to ill health and I had no business or retail experience,” she explained.
“However what I did have was a love for British crafts and a lot of determination. It can be difficult being a woman in business and there have been some very difficult times in those 15 years as well as some fabulous highs, but it has all been part of the journey.
“Today I have a business of which I am immensely proud and I job I love, and in recent months is was been lovely to have my son by my side too.”
Rachael who has won numerous business awards in those years including Leicestershire Rural Business Woman of the Year in 2006 and East Midlands Business Woman of the Year in 2008 has also been a writer for craft&design magazine and a business mentor during those years.
“I look forward to many more years in business, continuing to support and promote British craftsmanship through the gallery, mentoring and writing; in fact I have just been asked to write for Ceramics Review magazine,” added Rachael.
The gallery, which is situated at Staunton Harold near Ashby de la Zouch, supports and exhibits art and craft by over 100 different artists, designer makers and small creative businesses every year, showcasing work in disciplines such as ceramics, glass, textiles, jewellery, paintings and print.
