John of Gaunt, Shakespeare’s “time honoured Lancaster” was the fourth son of King Edward III, and was considered to be one of the most powerful princes of the 14th century.
The story of Katherine Swynford and John is of one of the greatest love affairs recorded in English history.
Lesley Smith, a renowned historian and curator of Tutbury Castle, will help the audience at Crich Glebe Field Centre at 7.30pm on April 22, travel back in time to the 14th century when there really were knights in shining armour.
Lesley speaks as if in the year 1399, a year of major upheaval, when Katherine, a a great beauty, would have been about 50, four years before her death.
