Free taster classes at Déda in Derby

Regional dance house Déda in Derby is holding free taster sessions on Saturday September 3 for two of the classes featured in the new season’s programme.

The venue has a packed programme of 47 different classes in Social Dance, Styles and Techniques and Body, Mind and Soul at its studios in Chapel Street, Cathedral Quarter with something for adults and children aged 18 months upwards.

A popular addition to the programme in recent times have been the Aerial courses for children and adults and free half hour taster sessions between 2pm and 4pm will give an introduction into working on the aerial hoop and trapeze.

The Social Dance programme has also been extended this year with new classes starting in early September for West Coast Swing as well as Morris and Folk Dance.

West Coast Swing is a laid back modern jive social dance that originates from Lindy Hop and is hailed as the ‘Dance of California’.  Free taster sessions will be held on September 3 between 2 and 4pm.

Déda Head of Dance Development and Learning Clare Limb explained: “Our September programmes are always extremely popular – particularly with people coming back from their summer holidays and with the excitement building for the launch of ‘Strictly’.

“The new class programme starting in September is our biggest and most diverse ever offer and truly offers something for everyone – whatever their age or experience.

“We appreciate that some people may be excited but a little tentative about our aerial classes so we hope that the half hour taster sessions will give them the confidence to try it out before booking on the six week courses starting the following week.

“We are also particularly excited to be introducing West Coast Swing for the first time.

“This is a brilliant social dance but perhaps not as well-known as our other social dance classes such as Argentine Tango, Ballroom and Latin and Rock ‘n’ Roll.  We hope that both experienced dancers and newcomers alike will take the opportunity to enjoy a taste of this new dance style for Déda.”

New additions to the programme also include Ballet Minis for three and four-year-olds on a Saturday morning and the Play Dance Move class on Monday and Friday mornings for pre-school children aged 18 months to four years.

For the adults, the new Zumba Gold on Tuesday lunchtimes is the perfect lower-intensity dance and fitness workout for older people.

And the new Morris and Folk Dance class on Thursday evenings will be led by Phil Preen from Cëilidh band ‘Bang on the Wall’ who hold popular events at Déda throughout the year.

They join an established programme of different styles and techniques from commercial and contemporary dance to belly dance, ballet and burlesque.

Classes for children and young people are available from 18 months through to 19 and the Déda Academy programme covers styles from Contemporary and Urban dance along with Ballet and Aerial skills.

The popular Body, Mind and Soul classes continue to attract new customers looking to improve their wellbeing, flexibility, strength and posture. Classes at the venue include Pilates, Ashtanga and Iyengar Yoga, Dance Gold for the over-50’s and Accessible Creative Movement for people with disabilities.
