The initial idea for the production came out of a workshop with local people and has since grown into an amazing opportunity for members of the community to take part in all aspects of creating a full-scale production, from working behind the scenes to performing.
Pulse focuses on a day in the life of the fictional Derby Orb Hospital, the beating heart of the city and its stories pulse through veins that connect us all – doctors and patients, cleaners and visitors, nurses and volunteers, the smokers, the jokers, the fragile and the fighters.
There’s Parveen, the hand surgeon unable to return to work since her husband died in the Orb less than a year ago and Lauren, seventeen, pregnant and terrified.
There’s the hospital chaplain, sometimes overwhelmed by all the prayers and the volunteer with the longest service record – and the biggest secret.
Teenage Sam, who is waiting for a heart transplant and Unity, an old lady in a coma, never actually meet but somehow manage to find each other…
Working alongside a professional creative team, Pulse features a cast of 40 plus people from different areas of the community, city and county and of varying ages, from age 14 to 82.
The company have been rehearsing every Tuesday evening for the past few weeks and, as production week nears, their rehearsals have increased to twice a week. The company also includes staff members from The Royal Derby Hospital.
Tickets for Pulse are £12 (concessions £9) and can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01332 593939 or online at http://www.derbytheatre.co.uk
