New Poet Laureate appointed

SONY DSCThe new Poet Laureate for Derbyshire is to be Helen Mort.

She is the fifth person to take the post and she replaces Matt Black who carried out his last engagement yesterday for National Poetry Day.

Her first official appearance will be at Wirksworth Library on Monday,  October 28 at 7pm as part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Discovery Days Festival and she will remain in post until September 2015.

Helen, who was born in Sheffield in 1985, grew up in Chesterfield.

She is the five-times winner of the Foyle Young Poets Award, she received an Eric Gregory Award in 2007 and won the Manchester Young Writer Prize in 2008.

In 2010 she was Poet-in-Residence at the Wordsworth Trust, Grasmere.

Her latest collection Division Street has just been published by Chatto & Windus and is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.
