ARTSBEAT MUSIC: John Watterson, who performs the show ‘Fake Thackray – the life and songs of Jake Thackray’, will open for the UK’s top folk rock band, Fairport Convention, when they perform at Chesterfield at the end of the month.
Jake Thackray became famous in the 60s and 70s performing witty, satirical and hilarious songs on BBC TV’s ‘That’s Life’ and he had a string of top selling albums and thousands of appearances before his untimely death in 2002.
John Watterson has been performing Jake Thackray’s songs for many years but only recently gave up the day job to perform as ‘Fake Thackray’.
His heartfelt and humorous tribute to this unique British songwriter has won him accolades from many fellow performers including Mike Harding, Ralph McTell, Dave Pegg and Anthony John Clarke. He has also performed for members of Jake’s family.
The Fairport support spot is highly prized on the folk circuit and John was delighted to be invited.
He said: “Jake’s work is pure genius, and the lyrics are timeless. His songs are warmly appreciated by audiences of all ages, and it is a privilege to perform them.”
Dave Pegg of Fairport says: “When I heard John’s CD I was convinced it was Jake. We are delighted that John is opening for us. He will be a hard act to follow!”
Fake Thackray will join Fairport Convention at the Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel on Wednesday February 27 at 7.30pm.
Tickets are priced from £17.50 and are available to purchase by calling the Chesterfield Theatres box office 01246 345 222 or online http://www.chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk.
