QUAD lines up more Light inspired events

alchemist-007More events will be taking in place in QUAD in Derby as part of ‘LIGHT’ season which explores the use of light and scientific endeavour in art.

The season is centred around the new exhibition Illuminated which looks at ‘light’ both as an influence and incorporated through artists work, on display in QUAD until February 3.

The inspiration for the season at QUAD is one of Derby’s most famous sons: Joseph Wright, and one of his key works, The Alchymist of 1771, is a catalyst for the entire season.

This stunning work embodies one of the most significant periods in history: the Enlightenment. The Alchymist displays what many scholars consider the triumph of rational science over that of superstition. QUAD’s season LIGHT sees art and science in unison, celebrating the power of knowledge through the works of artists, films, education and participation events.

Two exhibition talks will be held in QUAD as part of LIGHT season. Lucy Salt, Keeper of Art at Derby Museums and Art Gallery, will be providing a lecture on the work and ideas of Joseph Wright of Derby: ‘Bright Fictitious Lights’ The Work of Joseph Wright of Derby ‘ takes place on Saturday December 8 at 5pm. There is also chance to join QUAD / Illuminated Curator Peter Bonnell for an enlightening tour of the exhibition to discover how the project developed, with in-depth explanations of key works. The exhibition talk with Peter Bonnell takes place on Friday December 14 at 12noon. Both talks are free and booking is essential through QUAD box office.

There will be a music performance by Waqas Choudhary in the Gallery, inspired by Surtal Arts’ commission ‘Virtulight’ and the season of LIGHT at QUAD. Classically trained Bansuri flutist Waqas Choudhary, from Kashmir, will take the audience on a magical journey through the Illuminated exhibition as he interprets each artwork through unique musical compositions. The music performance by Waqas Choudhary takes place on Friday December 14 from 7pm, the cost is £3, and booking is essential through QUAD box office.

Virtulight is part of Surtal Arts annual Festival of Light. Surtal Arts has commissioned artist Ashok Mistry has been commissioned by Surtal Arts and produced a new virtual artwork which is a trail of virtual light sculptures with sound, titled ‘Virtulight’. Virtulight uses Augmented Reality technology that can be viewed using smart phones and tablets. The trail begins in QUAD Gallery, with a drawing by Joseph Wright brought to life, and then continues around Derby city centre until February 3. For information on the Virtulight project, please visit: http://virtulight.wordpress.com/
