Find out more about Scarthin Books

There are many places in Derbyshire that I love but this bookshop tops them all. If I have to choose one place to take friends visiting the county tit is always Scarthin Books. They boast of being quirky and competent and they most certainly are both. However many times you visit you always stumble across something new and the coffee in the cafe is just the best.

In the last few weeks I have been meeting many new people and several have said they had never heard of this gem of a bookshop in our midst – so this blog is for all of you out there who have never experienced Scarthin.

My posting has been made especially easy because this fantastic video by Gavin Repton is on You Tube…. Watching it you will meet the owner Dave, the manager of the shop David Booker, as well as some regular customers, Derbyshire’s poet Laureate Matt Black and our own retail inspector Anna Brown who promotes independent traders – her website is

One thing Scarthin Books does do exceptionally well is champion Derbyshire authors and once @artsbeat magazine is launched  I will be including a feature on one of those authors each month.  In the first issue I will also be interviewing Matt Black about his role in the county’s poetry world  – meanwhile you can hear him on the video reading the poem he has written about the bookshop. You can also read his blog here

Don’t limit yourself to just watching this video – go and see for yourself – as a hour or so browsing in the bookshop is the perfect way to brighten up a rainy autumn day.

You can follow them on twitter @scarthinbooks and @scarthincafe and they have a new website at where you will be able to find out all the latest news from the shop and details about special events. More details about the man behind the video camera can be found here
